The Association takes root in Tulla

 It is not surprising then, that a branch of the G.A.A. was established in Tulla in November 1885 and the following account appeared in the Saturday Record of 5 December, 1885:

"A branch of the G.A.A. was established on Wednesday last with the following officers: President: Rev. T. Lynch C.C.; Vice President: William Moloney; Committee: Jas. O’Donoghue, Tom Conheady, Ml. Corry, Jas. O’Connell, Andrew McNamara, and Jn. O’Halloran; Treasurer: Jas. Shank; Secretary: Pat O’Grady. Athletic Sports under the rules of G.A.A. to be held on St. Stephen’s Day."

However, the Saturday Record issue for St. Stephen’s Day was missing and therefore there is no report on the above-mentioned Athletic meeting.  The next mention of the G.A.A. in Tulla comes from the Clare Examiner of 8 January,1887, which states that a club was formed in Tulla on 1 January, 1887. This new club was known as Robert Emmet’s with the following officers being elected:

President: Fr. Lynch C.C.;

Vice President:William Moloney;

Deputy Vice President: James O’Donoghue;

Treasurer: P. O’Connor;

Secretary: John O’Dea.
 
While there is no doubt that a branch was established in November 1885, why then, one might ask are we recognising 1 January, 1887 as the official date of formation? The latter is the date which has been recognised from the beginning by the people of the parish. One is simply following a precedent set in 1912 when in January of that year special celebrations, including a concert in the Courthouse, were held to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the Association in Tulla (1 January, 1887).

During the G.A.A. Golden Jubilee year of 1934 a Booklet was published giving a short history of the clubs of Clare. This also reinforces the recognition of the Tulla Branch’s formation on 1 January, 1887

Dr. Tommy Daly

Dr. Tommy Daly was born in 1894 and resided at the square in Tulla. He died tragically on Monday the 21st September 1936. He played in many All-Ireland finals, wining five (four senior and one junior). He won his first All-Ireland medal in goal for Clare in 1914 in the Junior final.

Of hurlers young and free
Till blows the long, long whistle

Then up the hillside lonely
They're borne with funeral tread,
